Mecklenburg County pays $3.7M for Abersham site

Mecklenburg County’s land holdings just grew by about 242 acres.

Nearly two weeks ago, the county closed on the $3.7 million purchase of the property that was part of the failed Abersham subdivision, where only one home was built.

That home is occupied by Jason and Rachel Karo and is expected to become part of a 600-acre public park that the county plans to create using the Abersham site.

The nonprofit Trust for Public Land had acquired the property from four owners: CommunityOne Bank, Fifth Third Bank, Marble Properties and RBC Bank.

Ann Pilkington, an associate attorney with Charlotte-based law firm Horack Talley, who represented the Trust and assisted the county with title work, said it was a complicated deal.

“We had to terminate plats that had been put on record for the subdivision, which was a tricky thing because you don’t just terminate plats,” she said.

Horack Talley did the work pro bono. Pilkington said the firm’s donation was worth $20,000.
